Tithing for climate is an idea that has been gaining traction in recent years.  The idea behind it is simple:  that we each bear a responsibility to help repair the damage to the Earth that we each have personally caused.

In the absence of a government-imposed carbon tax, practitioners of carbon tithing recognize this responsibility and voluntarily pay into funds that address the climate crisis. It is a practice that has been gaining ground in recent years within the Faith community, particularly among Quakers and Unitarians.

The word “tithe” has been used to mean that which is owed to the sacred. But a tithe in Old English is also literally a tenth part, which is a helpful guide.  Carbon tithers are encouraged to examine their carbon footprints and contribute proportionally to solutions such as carbon sequestration efforts like those offered by the Olympic Carbon Fund.
